Activated Carbon

Activated carbon is a form of pure carbon which is constituted in such a way as to have a network of pores within its structure.  It is an extremely versatile agent for the extraction of organic compounds from liquid or gaseous streams.

It relies on a process known as adsorption whereby the organic molecules adhere to the extremely large surface area within the pores of the carbon.  Typically, activated carbon will have an internal surface area of about 1000 m2 per gram.

The media can be supplied as:

bulletPowder activated carbon, known as PAC
bulletGranular activated carbon, known as GAC
bulletPelletised activated carbon

Each of these forms has specific applications, and the choice will depend on the user's circumstances.

Typical uses for activated carbon include:

bulletPotable water purification
bulletWaste water purification
bulletAir purification
bulletOdour removal
bulletTaste removal
bulletColour removal
bulletRemoval of other unwanted organic compounds
bulletExtraction of desirable materials from solution (e.g. gold cyanide)
bulletSugar refining
bulletGlucose refining
bulletSeparation of organics from industrial solutions
bulletReduction of emissions
